Music Philosophy Statement - Brian King

Music has always been the way I understand the world, connect with others, and make sense of my own identity. As a multi‑instrumentalist and vocalist shaped by classical training, jazz influence, folk storytelling, and contemporary styles, I believe music is both a discipline and a human necessity. It is a space where people can feel seen, supported, and inspired - often in ways that words alone cannot achieve. My philosophy as a musician is grounded in three core values: connection, versatility, and growth.

I believe music is fundamentally relational. Whether performing on trumpet, piano, guitar, or voice, I approach music as a dialogue between performer and listener, past and present, self and community. My experiences - from performing Fauré’s Requiem with the Richmond Symphony to singing at Carnegie Hall - have shown me that music’s power lies not only in technical mastery but in its ability to create shared emotional experiences. I strive to make music that is honest, expressive, and rooted in empathy.

Versatility is central to my musical identity. I am committed to exploring repertoire across eras and genres because each style offers a different lens into human experience. Baroque counterpoint teaches discipline and structure; jazz invites spontaneity and risk‑taking; folk and protest music reveal the ways art can reflect and challenge society. This breadth allows me to meet students and audiences where they are, and it reinforces my belief that no single tradition holds a monopoly on musical meaning.

My background in psychology deeply shapes my philosophy. I view music‑making as a process of personal development - one that involves identity, confidence, vulnerability, and emotional resilience. I aim to create learning environments that are trauma‑informed, culturally responsive, and grounded in social‑emotional growth. Students deserve classrooms where they feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and discover their own artistic voices. My goal is to teach in a way that honors the whole person, not just the performer.

Ultimately, I believe music is a lifelong journey. It asks us to listen deeply, reflect honestly, and continually refine our craft. My mission is to use music to build community, foster belonging, and help others experience the transformative power that music has had in my own life. Whether I am performing, teaching, or leading ensembles, I hope to inspire connection, curiosity, and a sense of shared humanity through every note.
