My musical journey and passion for teaching
Brian King’s Music Biography
Brian King is a multi‑instrumentalist and vocalist whose musical life has been shaped by curiosity, community, and a genuine love for making music. Performing on trumpet, piano, guitar, and voice, he draws from classical, jazz, folk, and contemporary influences, allowing each style to inform the way he approaches sound and expression.
Brian’s musical roots trace back to his years growing up in Virginia, where he performed in All‑County, All‑Regional, and All‑State Symphonic Bands. He later had the opportunity to take part in larger choral‑orchestral works, including Fauré’s Requiem with the Richmond (Indiana) Symphony Orchestra, and eventually performed at Carnegie Hall. These experiences deepened his appreciation for ensemble music and the sense of connection that comes from creating something alongside others.
He is completing his B.A. in Humanities (Music) at Indiana University East, where he has continued exploring music across genres and traditions. Brian is also earning his B.S. in Psychology from IU East, a background that quietly shapes the way he listens, collaborates, and approaches musical expression. His studies have helped him appreciate the emotional and human side of music - the way it can comfort, challenge, and bring people together.
As a performer, Brian is known for his warm tone, expressive phrasing, and willingness to move between styles with openness rather than ego. Whether playing on stage, sharing music in small community settings, or collaborating with friends, he approaches each performance as an opportunity to offer something meaningful and honest.
Brian’s musical journey continues to evolve, guided by a simple belief: music is at its best when it creates space for people to feel understood and connected. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to authenticity, versatility, and the idea that music - at any level - has the power to make a difference.

My Career Goals
Musical Career Goals - Brian King
My musical career is rooted in a lifelong commitment to versatility, connection, and the belief that music can transform individuals and communities. As a multi‑instrumentalist and vocalist with experience in classical, jazz, folk, and contemporary styles, my goal is to build a career that integrates performance, education, psychology, and community leadership.
One of my primary goals is to become a student‑centered, culturally responsive music educator who helps young musicians develop not only technical skills but also confidence, identity, and emotional resilience. Drawing on my background in psychology, I aim to create learning environments that are trauma‑informed, inclusive, and grounded in social‑emotional growth. I want my future classroom to be a place where students feel safe to explore, take risks, and discover their own artistic voices.
I am preparing to enter the next chapter of my musical life, which will allow me to deepen my pedagogical knowledge, strengthen my musicianship, and develop the tools needed to lead ensembles with clarity, empathy, and artistic vision. Long‑term, I hope to teach at the middle‑ or high‑school level, where I can support students during a formative stage of their musical and personal development.
Beyond the classroom, I plan to remain an active performer - continuing to explore a wide range of repertoire across eras and genres. I want to model lifelong musicianship for my students by performing in community ensembles, presenting recitals, and collaborating with local artists. My goal is to curate performances that connect history, culture, and personal storytelling, helping audiences experience music as a bridge between people and perspectives.
I also aspire to contribute to the broader field of music education through research, writing, and community programming. I am particularly interested in how identity, self‑monitoring, and performance anxiety shape students’ musical experiences, and I hope to develop workshops or resources that support young musicians in navigating these challenges.
Ultimately, my career goal is to use music as a tool for connection, healing, and empowerment. Whether I am teaching, performing, or leading community initiatives, I want my work to reflect the values that have shaped my musical life: versatility, authenticity, and a deep commitment to helping others grow through music.
